Weekend in Borba
Between Talhas, Embroidery and Marble, ua route through know-how and the soul of Alentejo
In the heart of Alentejo, Borba is a territory shaped by stone and time. Among carved wines, embroidery from Arraiolos and marble quarries, reveals itself to be a village where art, industry and tradition coexist in harmony. A place that tells stories of hands and raw materials, and which is rediscovered in every detail. It is this heritage that this itinerary invites you to discover.

Saturday – Clay and wool roots
IN Rézio — Borba Interactive House Museum
1st of May Street, 2, Fight
Wednesday to Sunday: 10h–1 p.m | 14h–17h
The morning begins at Interactive House Museum IN Rézio, a space that preserves and shares the ancient tradition of carved wine. The building, an old family cellar, guard 46 original carvings, a vinegar cellar, old stables and an interior courtyard that breathes history and authenticity. The visit combines interactive technology and living memory, revealing how the winemaking process — inherited from the Romans — continues almost unchanged, passing from generation to generation.
It is in this scenario that we find the work “A Talha”, by artist Sara Ratola, centerpiece of this experience and symbolic starting point for the weekend.

“A Talha” by Sara Ratola
A carving is a vessel made of clay, with different capabilities, Traditionally used in Alentejo to make wine. This process dates back to Roman times and has remained almost unchanged.. This way, “A Talha” represents all this knowledge, carrying in its emptiness the roots of tradition, of the heritage and knowledge of Alentejo. This work, to represent, an Alentejo tradition is also conceived by applying a textile manipulation technique based on Alentejo know-how, Arraiolos Embroidery.
On a jute canvas measuring approximately 78cm x 118cm, Arraiolos embroidery grows and occupies the space, leaving a void: the inside of the carving. Being inside, that seems like a huge void (screen in sight), reveals himself to be the guardian of a tradition, where roots of wisdom proliferate. The roots are embroidered in flower stitch, This point was used in Arraiolos rugs from the 19th century.. XVI to create the outlines of the embroidered motifs. The work has only one color that symbolizes wine.
In this piece, wine and embroidery meet. Clay and wool become language. And Alentejo reveals itself in its purest form.

Lunch at Florbela Espanca Restaurant and farewell
R. Florbela Espanca 56, 7160-283 Vila Viçosa
To end the weekend, the invitation is for a relaxed lunch at the Florbela Espanca Restaurant, tribute to the poet born in Vila Viçosa, one of the most intense and sensitive voices in Portuguese literature. The atmosphere is familiar and welcoming, and the dishes — oven-roasted lamb, cod migas and Alentejo Açorda — evoke the simplicity and depth of Alentejo flavors.
Between verses and steaming platters, the farewell is said in the same spirit with which it began: celebrating Alentejo in its authenticity.
And as Florbela Espanca would say, perhaps this is the place where “the soul lies in the lap of the wind” — a territory of silence, beauty and emotion that remains in the hearts of those who visit it.
