The Roadmap “The Tapestry Manufacture in Portalegre” introduces you to local wool factories through a tour of and Industrial Tourism carried out from Évora, Estremoz, Elvas or Alter do Chão to discover the art of Portalegre Tapestry Manufacturing. Includes a visit to the Tapestry Museum, to the old Robinson cork plant, now deactivated, and the José Régio Museum as an example of a popular art collection from Alentejo.

PLACES TO VISIT
Portalegre Tapestry Manufacture
After the first tapestry created with the Portalegre knot in 1942, invented by Manuel do Carmo Peixinho, the art of manufacturing in Portalegre is consolidated 10 years later, by the hand of Guy Fino and Manuel Celestino Peixeiro. The perfection of the technique makes this artistic manufacture of works of art considered the best in the world, to produce works the transposition of original works of art by great artists, nationals and internationals.
Robinson Museum and Space
Installing in the former convent of São Francisco, it housed 160 cork company Robinson years, having been transformed into a museum and cultural space. It is a good example of industrial heritage equipment undergoing rehabilitation with a rich history.
José Régio Museum
The house where the poet José Régio (1901-1969) lived while he was teacher in Portalegre, was transformed into a museum in 1971, on the initiative of the City Council. With unchanged interior, following the poet's desire, presents to the public a rich collection of sacred and popular art from the region, that he gathered throughout his life.
Portalegre Tapestry Museum
The creation of this museum is due to the initiative of the City Hall, which, em 2001, provided the city with a space dedicated to the presentation, conservation and study of this unique artistic heritage. With donations from the manufacture and other national museums, complements the visit to the production unit. It features works by important artists such as Julio Pomar, Lima de Freitas, Maria Keil, Vieira da Silva, Almada Negreiros, between others.
