“The Serra da Estrela Wool Tradition” showcases local wool industries in an Industrial Tourism model
The Script “The Serra da Estrela Wool Tradition” introduces you to local wool factories through visits from Turismo Industrial carried out from the city of Porto or Coimbra, to learn about the tradition of Serra da Estrela wool crafts and its evolution through time, visiting industrial heritage centers and modern working manufacturing facilities.
The program of 1 is, begins at the current facilities of the Burel Factory, goes to the Wool Museum of the University of Beira Interior, where the history and treatment techniques of wool products are presented, and ends with a visit to the New Hand Lab, both last in Covilhã.

Burel Factory
It is a Portuguese brand born in Serra da Estrela. A heritage recovery project that gave a new history to the region’s wool industry, revitalizing burel – ancestral fabric used by mountain shepherds, making it synonymous with color, design, creativity and sustainability.
Beira Interior Wool Museum
Its mission is to safeguard the heritage associated with one of the oldest human industries, in a territory that, with Serra da Estrela as its headquarters and the historic center of Covilhã, He soon opened up to international contacts. It is a museum with two sections located in historic buildings, with a very complete collection and exemplary adaptation interventions.
New Hand Lab
The former António Estrela, which was internationally recognized for the quality of its production, stepped into a center for promoting creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship through the implementation of ideas, products and initiatives. His immense booty of woolen threads, machinery and equipment are now at the disposal of the artistic and creative community.
