ABOUT THE furniture route
According to historians, they would have been the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, who inhabited the Vilela Monastery for centuries, who started the custom of working wood and producing furniture in the region. This conclusion is based on mills located in the vicinity of the Monastery that used the power of the waters of the Ferreira River to cut wood and Vilela,, By year 1000 (there has been a notation of the monastery since 1030).
The roots of wood processing originate in the manufacture of agricultural implements, possibly like the old wooden plows, discoveries in archaeological excavations. With time, this ability evolved into the creation of other artifacts, wooden furniture and chairs. The Paredes region, blessed with abundant forests of different species, provided the valuable raw material essential for the flourishing of the furniture industry. In a harmonious alliance between the natural wealth of the forests and the driving force of the nearby river, the wood was carefully cut and crafted, allowing the craft to come to life and prosper. This perfect encounter between natural resources and the craftsmanship of local masters shaped the destiny of the timber industry., transforming it into a fascinating narrative of progress and creativity.
Thanks to this fact, hydraulic sawmills emerged, settling along watercourses, all over the county, helping to transform wooden logs into planks. It was in the 20th century that they began to disappear, and giving way to wood sawmills with steam boilers and later, With the advent of electricity, several sawmills appeared throughout the municipality, especially in the north, as is the case of the city of Rebordosa.
And so the municipality of Paredes became known as the Cradle of Furniture. Currently, the municipality has adopted the Rota dos Móveis brand to coexist with the brand of the neighboring municipality of Paços de Ferreira – Mobile Capital.
