The Tile art of Lisbon
Route “To Tile Art ” from Lisbon visits tile production and distribution units. The visit passes through the oldest active manual tile factory and a center for safeguarding Portuguese industrial tiles from the mid-20th century, for replacement and creation of contemporary design pieces.
The program of 1/2 is, begins at the current facilities of Fábrica Sant’Anna, Head to Largo do Intendente, where the history of the most emblematic tile production house in Portugal began and ends, with a visit to the Cortiço Store & Grandchildren, very close to Largo do Intendente.
PLACES TO VISIT
Sant’Anna Tile Factory
Considered the only factory in the 20th century. XVIII still in operation, Sant’Anna continues to produce tiles and earthenware using traditional techniques, from preparing the clay to manually painting all the pieces. The current factory on Calçada da Boa Hora is a good example of industrial architecture.
Tenement & Grandchildren
It is dedicated to the sale of discontinued lines of industrial ceramic coatings. In its collection there are original examples produced since the 1990s. 60 in different factories, many of them disappeared and today required by architects and designers to create contemporary design panels.
Viúva Lamego Building
Built between 1849 and 1865, the building located in Intendente has a facade completely decorated with figurative tiles, by the artistic director of the factory, Ferreira das Tablets, in a pioneering example of the use of tiles as an advertising medium. Originally the pottery workshop of António Costa Lamego, became a factory, and adopted the name Viúva Lamego when António Lamego's wife took over its management, following the death of her husband, em 1876.
