A Unique Experience in the Azores Tea Plantations
The Fábrica de Chá Porto Formoso is one of the oldest and most renowned tea factories in Portugal. Located on the stunning island of São Miguel, in the Azores, This factory has a long history of producing high quality tea, using traditional methods dating back to the 19th century.
From 2001 that Fábrica de Chá Porto Formoso organizes, annually, in its plantations the recreation of the traditional tea harvest. The “Start of Harvest” takes place on the first Saturday of May, that matches, normally, with the first tea leaf plucking. This tourist and cultural entertainment event, unique in the region and country, involves more than a hundred extras in the manual harvesting of tea.
With a privileged location among lush tea plantations, the Porto Formoso Tea Factory offers a unique experience, where visitors can learn about the tea production process, from harvesting the leaves to transforming them into delicious infusions. Furthermore, the factory also has a charming shop where visitors can purchase a variety of exclusive teas, souvenirs and local products.
After a short introductory video and a brief explanation about the teas and how they are prepared, the visitor has the opportunity to taste Porto Formoso Tea in a traditional room and also to purchase typical products.
