Discover Gondomar between the gold of the filigree and the tranquility of the Douro
There are destinations that reveal themselves through the landscapes. Others win us over for their gastronomy or monumental heritage. Gondomar makes itself discovered in a different way: by the hands of those, for generations, transforms delicate gold and silver threads into true works of art.
Recognized as the Capital of Portuguese Goldsmithing, It is in this municipality that around 60% of national goldsmith production and where filigree continues to be a living heritage, preserved by families who maintain a unique know-how.
To open this universe to the public,, em 2016, to Filigree Route, a route that allows you to enter traditionally closed workshops, meet the master goldsmiths and discover how one of the most emblematic Portuguese arts continues to be passed down from generation to generation.
During these 48 hours, the first day will be dedicated to filigree and the people who keep it alive. The second invites you to discover a different Gondomar, enter a arte, the Douro River and a cultural program that reveals a territory far beyond gold.

The best way to start this journey is at Gramido Branch House, an elegant 19th century building situated on the banks of the Douro, where history, heritage and tourism intersect in a single space. This is where the Interactive Tourism Loja, o Filigree Route Welcome Center and the Filigran Municipal Museum, making this the natural starting point for anyone wanting to understand the importance of goldsmithing in Gondomar.
Before starting the visit to the workshops, take some time to explore the museum. More than an exhibition of pieces, This space explains how filigree became part of economic identity, social and cultural of the municipality. Among the highlighted works are some of the most emblematic creations promoted by the Municipality of Gondomar, like the Largest Filigree Heart in the World, designed by CINDOR and executed by 25 craftsmen from 12 local businesses, or the extraordinary Filigree Dress, created to represent Gondomar at Expo Dubai in a collaboration between stylist Micaela Oliveira, master goldsmith Arlindo Moura and fifteen artisans from the municipality.
It's also worth looking at the building itself.. It was precisely at the White House in Gramido that, em 1847, was signed to Grassive convention, the treaty that put an end to the War of Patuleia, marking one of the most relevant political episodes in Portuguese history in the 19th century.

Each workshop has its own identity. Some maintain the working methods of several generations practically unchanged. Others demonstrate how filigree found new languages through contemporary design and collaboration with international creators. In common, they all share the same respect for tradition and an absolute dedication to detail.

CINDOR — the only professional training center in Portugal dedicated exclusively to goldsmithing, jewelry and watchmaking. This is where many future artisans learn traditional techniques, ensuring the continuity of this heritage. The center also promotes workshops and experiences where visitors can come into close contact with the production process.
AC Filigranas — workshop founded by Antonio Cardoso, whose international projection was associated with the well-known “sharon stone effect”. A media episode that helped raise the world's attention to Portuguese filigree and opened new doors for the internationalization of this know-how.
António Marinho Joias — an example of how tradition and innovation can go hand in hand. The creativity, technical excellence and presence in initiatives such as Portugal Fashion demonstrate that filigree continues to evolve without losing its essence.
ARPA — family business where artisanal knowledge passes from generation to generation, combining traditional techniques with production for national and international brands.
Conceição Neves — considered one of the most recognized Portuguese filigree artists, collaborated with brands such as Topázio and designer Christian Louboutin, demonstrating that an ancient technique continues to inspire contemporary design.
Monteiro de Sousa & Children — an example of the continuity of a family tradition, where innovation and respect for heritage go hand in hand.
Topázio — founded in 1874, continues to be a reference for Portuguese silver, preserving a centuries-old legacy that combines excellence in craftsmanship and design.
At the end of this first day, you will take with you much more than the shine of gold. It will carry the memory of conversations, of the gestures and stories of those who dedicate their entire lives to preserving one of the most extraordinary Portuguese know-how. That's when you realize that the true wealth of Gondomar continues to be made by hand.

After a day dedicated to workshops, to the master goldsmiths and the delicate shine of the filigree, The time has come to discover a different Gondomar. The pace slows down, the Douro takes center stage and art reveals a new way of understanding this territory.
The place where drawing comes to life
With a privileged view over the Douro River, o Drawing Place – Júlio Resende Foundation It's one of those spaces that naturally makes us slow down.
Created in 1993 by the painter Júlio Resende himself, the Foundation was created to preserve and publicize the work of one of the most important Portuguese artists of the 20th century, but quickly established itself as a reference center dedicated to contemporary design. When going through its rooms you will find around 2.500 works, between paintings, designs, engravings and preparatory studies that allow us to follow Júlio Resende's artistic trajectory over several decades.
But this is not just a memory space. Throughout the year, the Foundation hosts temporary exhibitions by national and international artists, conferences, concertos, book launches, creative workshops and various educational activities, making each visit different from the last.
The large windows open over the Douro are part of the experience itself. The landscape discreetly enters the rooms and helps to understand why the river was a constant presence in the painter's work..
If you want to extend your visit, you can also get to know the Casa-Atelier Júlio Resende, preserved practically as the artist left it. Between brushes, sketches, books and personal objects, It is possible to enter the creative universe of one of the biggest names in Portuguese painting.

A tour where the Douro sets the pace
