Joana Vasconcelos creates a Valkyrie Miss Dior

What I would give to have watched…

This week the creative and haute couture communities were hand in hand at the main Maison French to watch a misancene incredible: an installation by artist Joana Vasconcelos!

Using the 20 fabrics with which the brand dressed its mannequins that presented the next autumn/winter season 2023-2024 and which you receive in your studio, the artist replicates Valkyrie in yet another of her metamorphoses and creates “o” setting of one of the most anticipated moments of haute couture week: the Dior fashion show.

Sophisticated, very textured and colorful, and majestic is how one can describe the installation that shapes the profile’s own path. What they wouldn't give if everyone who follows and enjoys Joana Vasconcelos's artistic work had been present to watch and witness her splendor and success, result of the work of a large team of artisans and manufacturers that orchestrates in its 3500m2 of atelier, in one of Lisbon's riverside areas.

We received the news like so many others who were not present, as it was shared by the artist on her Instagram account, and showed how everything was happening in a video where it is possible to see the great piece created for what is considered one of the brands most prestigious luxury brands in the fashion industry.

Valkyrie Miss Dior

Valkyrie Miss Dior was the name chosen for this “great sculpture site-specific, textile and entirely handmade”, as Joana Vasconcelos explains in an interview with CNN, and prepared by journalist Maria João Avilez.

The installation was custom-made for this show with the purpose of honoring the couturier's sister, being a tribute to Catherine Dior, one of the muses of fashion creator Christian Dior and like so many of his other works,, once again stands out for its scale and organic adaptation to the occasion. Valkyrie Miss Dior tem 24 meters wide and seven meters high, and was assembled in Tuileries Garden, in Paris, place where it all happened.

The creative director of Maison highlighted, praised the work of the Portuguese artist, stating that “It was an absolute dream to collaborate with the wonderful Joana Vasconcelos in installing the parade, a journey that began six months ago in Lisbon and was revealed today.”
